Murphy Dental Biography
Established in 1999, Murphy Dental is a privately owned company located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, next to Flathead Lake, the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River, 45 miles south of majestic Glacier Park.
Murphy Dental is a grass roots company that has grown incrementally over the years, from dentist to dentist, literally by ‘word of mouth’. We have not had the marketing budget or recognition of some of the other primary dental product companies, but Murphy Dental has gained an admirable acceptance in the professional dental community as a provider of consistently high quality teeth whitening products at affordable prices.
Having a dentist in the family, we were familiar with the teeth whitening procedure and saw a need for affordable whitening products. With a background in chemistry, and working alongside dentists experienced with teeth whitening products, we compared formulas of already existing products and came up with a formula of our own. Then we learned of a man named Franz Pum, who was just retiring. He had a PhD in Chemistry and worked most of his career as a Peroxide Chemist for Gillette. With Dr. Pum’s amazing insight we were able to attain maximum efficacy that compared favorably to top products on the market, with the additional benefit of shorter application times, thus increasing patient compliance.
Murphy Dental’s peroxide whitening gels are made to have a neutral pH of about 7 to avoid any chance it would acid etch the enamel of the teeth like low pH peroxide gels. Peroxides are very stable at low pH so can have longer shelf-life. At neutral or high pH peroxides whitening gels are less stable so have a shorter shelf-life. In order to provide a neutral pH whitening gel one can introduce preservatives/stabilizers to counter act this. However, we have found that adding stabilizers tend to reduce efficacy when applied. So, Murphy Dental does not use preservatives or stabilizers in our products. The Oxydent and Lustredent Gels are refrigerated from production to shipping and refrigeration is recommended upon receipt of whitening products for maximum shelf life and product quality. Refrigeration cost more, but to have a product that works best and does not acid etch enamel is of utmost importance. All peroxide products degrade over time.
